End of Year Reflection and Growth

End of year reflection and growth is more my style.

I’m not sure if you’re like me, but I’m not a New Years resolution person. I believe in working on being a better me throughout the year, not just at the beginning of a new year.

Instead of resolutions, I’ve started sitting down towards the end of the year and reflecting on all that transpired emotionally, spiritually and physically, both personally and professionally.

I keep track of what happens each month in my yearly planner throughout the year so when I sit down in December, it’s easier to view all the awesomeness, victories and spiritual growth (aka pain, struggles and learning) that transpired throughout the year.

When I look back I’m always surprised at how incredible life really is.

This past year I found myself looking back on all the opportunities God has blessed me with, the people that He’s put in my life and the spiritual growth I’ve encountered.

I celebrate successes with my clients all the time, so I thought, I should do the same with myself. I was totally surprised after I wrote my list from 2016. There was so much more than I would have thought. Accomplishments, stepping out in faith, having courage, new opportunities (like moving to a new state – say what????), etc., it was pretty great to see.

I’m not saying it was easy, nope I’m not. This past year wasn’t so easy at times. It was the longest time frame that I went without seeing my kid Maxwell (10 months). That’s a long time for a momma, no fun! It’s also been the longest I’ve spent being away from my McSmeetchie. This past year of spending so much time away from my boys was not easy, and I did not enjoy it. I am an extrovert. I love quality time and caring connection, especially with my two boys! It was lonely and quiet. But, I got throughout it. It gave me time to reflect, learn and grown. It’s definitely been a year of self-knowledge (understanding of one’s own capabilities, character, feelings, or motivations).

What’s important is recognizing the growth you’ve achieved over the past 12 months. During your struggles this year, what did you learn about yourself? Who was there to love and support you? What tools did you have to help you overcome? In what ways are you a better you because of it?

I pray you take a moment to reflect on the past year. As you grow in self-knowledge may you experience more compassion for yourself and others.

Remember, life is an adventure. It’s not the destination we reach that is most rewarding. It’s the journey along the way.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Shine On,
Ali

P.S. The world needs your light, keep shining brightly!
